The third Thursday of every month, a growing group of friends meet at North Asheville’s equivalent to “Cheers” for half-price martini night.  Last night, I ordered my new standby: a Hendricks gin martini, no vermouth, bruised (shaken so hard that the drink contains tiny ice crystals). A number of the women—as well as a few men—ordered Cosmopolitans.  Here’s a variation of the “Cosmo.” It’s called the Metropolitan.

Take one and a half ounces of brandy and mix with one ounce of sweet vermouth, a half teaspoon of superfine sugar, and two dashes of Angostura bitters in a cocktail shaker.  Shake with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a cherry.
